Petrographic Analysis using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)

Analysis of rock minerals is done using transmitted light and/or reflected light microscopy. Both cross-polarized and plane-polarized light are used.

Report data from PLM examination includes:

  • Detailed mineralogy
  • Estimated modal proportions of each mineral
  • Microstructures
  • Texture
  • Classification
  • Alteration
  • Type of rock

The report also includes a set of scaled photomicrographs (xpl, ppl) annotated with mineral names. Cost of sample preparation is in addition to this analysis.

Set of Diorite photomicrographs (xpl/ppl) annotated with minerals identified using PLM. Bt = biotite, Chl = chlorite, Hbl = hornblende, Pl = plagioclase, Qz = quartz
